On The Down Low

There’s a nondescript house in a Sellwood residential neighborhood that doesn’t look like anything special. You might wonder if you’re at the right place, but step inside the front door and you’ll discover a cool speakeasy with a fabulous Prohibition vibe. The décor is vintage, with items like an old-school mechanical cash register and Art Deco–era music playing from a converted vintage console radio, making it feel like you’ve gone back in time.

Bible Club PDX is a small joint with a few intimate tables and plush chairs. “Libations” and “Sacraments” on the drinks menu, but the mixologists are more than capable of creating a wide range of cocktails in unique glassware. The Remember the Maine is okay, but I prefer their Red Hook.

Insider tip: Ask for a Luxardo cherry and avoid the metal coupes.

The food menu is limited, but they do have some very tasty dishes. If I want something not too heavy, I order the meatballs. It’s an appetizer, but it comes with bread and is filling. My go-to, though, is Beecher’s Grilled Cheese with aged sharp cheddar and a Parmigiano-Reggiano crust. Add the pork and it becomes a savory, delicious handheld.
