VanPort Insider Facebook Group 1st Anniversary

July 16th marks the 1st anniversary of VanPort Insider’s Facebook group. The online community of foodies shares reviews, job opportunities in the food service industry, and restaurant announcements to keep members informed of the latest happenings. In just twelve months, membership has grown to more than 850. Although it’s still in its humble beginnings, engagement is very high.
Michael Key, the group admin, says, “A lot of big groups are mostly lurkers. Our members contribute a lot. We have as many review posts with photos as groups several times our size. VanPort Insider definitely punches above its weight, yet it’s virtually free of the drama that plagues some Facebook groups. Our community barely needs moderation. I’m happy to say our members are well-behaved humans.“
Some members occasionally meet up for a meal. Top Contributor, Nan Rickey organizes meet-ups about once a month, but there are organic gatherings at restaurants too. Nan says, “There is something special about sharing a meal, laughing together, and enjoying good conversation with people who have a common interest. I feel truly blessed by the wonderful friends I’ve met along the way.“
Noted foodie, Crystal Atkinson stated, “It’s nice to have a relaxed yet excited group of local foodies to share about all the cool spots with. VanPort Insider has dedicated lists for any kind of thing you’re looking for. It is a gold mine of information! I’m happy to contribute to this community!“
Group Expert Monica Scheerer said, “Through it (VanPort Insider), I have met and made new friends and discovered so many new and diverse eating places to enjoy. From food trucks to bistros to fine dining—and let’s not leave out bakeries—we hit them all, and I’m just honored to be here.”
Tanner Genck, Ondus Director of Food and Beverage shared his perspective, “Our facebook group provides a great platform that is direct to our community. Not only are we able to see first hand opinions of local restaurants but it also helps shape and coach how we interact with those establishments. So many platforms breed a toxic environment that tend to bury peoples dreams of owning eateries. This one however, reaches them directly. It allows them to connect with their guest base and shape expectations, see what they need to improve on and hear what they do really well. When people are invested in the success of their local businesses it creates a community that bonds over the one thing we all have in common, FOOD!”
