The Top Ten Spots for Eggs Benedict in VanPort
Perfectly poached eggs and savory Canadian bacon placed atop an English muffin, all under a shroud of hollandaise sauce.
Eggs Benedict has a somewhat disputed origin, with a few competing stories — all pointing to New York City in the late 19th century. The most popular account involves a Wall Street broker named Lemuel Benedict, who in 1894 wandered into the Waldorf Astoria Hotel hungover and ordered buttered toast, crispy bacon, two poached eggs, and a hooker of hollandaise sauce. Maître d’hôtel Oscar Tschirky was so impressed he put a version of it on the menu, swapping the toast for English muffins and the bacon for ham.
Some places only serve eggs Benedict on the weekend but we kept our list to eateries that reguraly serve it. These are our Top Ten Spots for Eggs Benedict:
1. City State Diner
Portland – LaurelhurstEggs Benedict is the main dish served at City State Diner. They have ten different styles. Most are choices of protein but there’s vegetarian and vegan options in there too. With that many choices, they have one for just about anybody. Street parking is luck of the draw.

2. Bertie Lou’s
Portland – Sellwood
Bertie Lou’s is a tiny eatery with a giant reputation for serving some the best eggs Benedict around. They have seven different types to choose from. They don’t have a website but there’s inspiring photos on their Instagram.
3. The Diner
Vancouver – South
The Diner is a comfortable breakfast/brunch restaurant in association with Meals on Wheels. They’re only open until 2:30pm. Their moto is “Serving more than just a meal”. Their Eggs Benedict is fantastic. The Hollandaise sauce is on point. The bacon is awesome too. Their regulars are big fans.
They ask you not to tip! They state on their menu: ” Skip the tip. Feed a neighbor. Our staff are paid a livable wage. Instead of tipping, you can donate toward the cost of a meal for someone in need.” The Diner is run in association with Meals on Wheels, a nonprofit that delivers more than 25,000 meals each week to older adults in the Portland metro area and southwest Washington. All that and the prices are still very reasonable.
4. Cecilia
Vancouver – South
Cecilia is the same owner as Amaro’s Table and Gustav’s. The art direction is savvy and more spacious than La Provence. Cecilia serves two types of Eggs Benedict. A classic with ham and also a Vegetarian Benedict with avocado, tomato jam, cheddar biscuit, poached egg, and hollandaise.
5. La Provence
Both – Several
Quality French restaurant with friendly staff and good food made with care. La Provence serves eggs Benedict on a croissant. It’s kind of like sandwich. But like an ostriche, neither are made to get off the ground. Having said that, it’s very popular.
6. Uptown Barrel Room
Vancouver – Downtown
Uptown Barrel Room has two types of Eggs Benedict. A classic with ham but also one with lobster crab.
7. Genies Cafe
Portland – Central
Genies Cafe offers two types of eggs Benedict. A classic with Canadian bacon and a vegetarian with spinach, mushrooms, and smoked tomato, on risotto cakes.
8. Café du Berry
Portland – South
Café du Berry is also French inspired. But unlike La Provence, they serve eggs Benedict on traditional English muffins. No verations. They keep it classic.
9. 13 coins
Vancouver – Waterfront
13 Coins is in the Hotel Indigo along with El Goucho. They serve classic Eggs Benedict with a handsome presentation but it will cost you. At $22 it’s already the most expensive but they charge an extra 4% fee that’s not part of the tip.
10. Dulin’s Village Cafe
Vancouver – Downtown
Dulin’s Village Cafe doesn’t have a website but they do have a solid following that loves their eggs Benedict. They’re only open until 2pm.
