Steak is about the most expensive entree you can order. But sometimes you just have to splurge. But if you’re going to pony up for a steak make sure it’s a great one. It sucks to be disappointed. But we can help make sure you go to the right place. Here’s our list of the best ones in VanPort.

1. Ruth’s Chris

Portland – Downtown
Consistent

It’s a chain but you’d never guess it if you didn’t know. Top shelf food with a staff to match. They consistently serve fantastic steak every time. This place is hard to beat. Ruth’s Chris has a lovely wine list, and not craft but decent cocktails. Unfortunately the only sweet vermouth is Dolin. Their staff are staff professionals who endeavor to make you feel special. PRO TIP: the steak sandwich at happy hour $19 and fabulous. The zucchini fries are tasty.

2. RingSide Steakhouse

Portland – Downtown
Old School Cool

Ringside is a Portland institution that’s an old school cool steak joint. They play music from Nat King Cole, Ella, Frank Sinatra, etc. The cocktails are solid. This joint has a magic about it that is tough to put my finger on. Everything is just right.

3. Laurelhurst Market

Portland – Central
Relaxed

Wonderful Food Served with Pride. Laurelhurst Market is a great place for dinner. Their food is really top notch. Their cocktails are pretty good. It’s not a great place for young kids but ideal for couples. They have a fantastic ribeye steak. I like to add their “cowboy candy” which is candied jalapenos. The mac and cheese is yummy. Their menu changes often. The parking lot is small. Most likely you’ll need to find street parking so allow time to find a spot.

4. Feast@316

Vancouver – Camas
Good But $$$$

I’ve had some good steak at Feast but prices have significantly increased. Also their steak has been hit or miss for me lately. When I do go, I’m choosing less expensive cuts. The 12 oz hanger steak is good.
Those willing to throw caution to the wind and cross the bridge have top steakhouses to choose from. For example, Portland City Gill is slightly cheaper and you get the best view in the city. I’m sure savvy diners will factor all this in when deciding to splurge for a steak dinner.
INSIDER TIP: Beer is not on the menu but they a half dozen on tap and a few in bottles. Street parking is luck of the draw.

5. OX

Portland – Downtown
Great Vibe

One of Portland’s best restaurants. The food is superb and the craft cocktails are really good. They have loads of starters. A great selection of meat to choose from (of course) and plenty of dishes on the “From the Garden” menu. The staff are top notch. It can get loud in there. They now take reservations…which is a game changer. There’s a separate bar in a waiting area.

6. El Gaucho Portland

Portland – Downtown
Long Time Portland Favorite

Festive steakhouse in the historic Benson Hotel….but with sky high prices. For the most part, there are better choices. I don’t order a steak there anymore. But the table side Caesar salad might just redefine your opinion of a Caesar. Lovely live Spanish guitars is a major plus. Be very careful what you order at the bar. If you ask for any substitution your drinks can cost as much as your meal. Ruth’s Chris, Morton’s and Portland City Grill are a far better value for my money.

7. Portland City Grill

Portland- Downtown
Best View

Best view in the city. Food is usually very good. These days their prices are decent compared to their competition. Morton’s is cheaper but they don’t have PCG’s view. Cocktails are middle of the road at upscale price. Wine is a better choice. Obviously a table by a window is a luxury if you’re fortunate to get one. It’s a great place to bring people from out of town for the view.

8. The Hammond

Vancouver – East
So Good

Their ribeye is 13 oz and one of the better seasoned steaks I’ve had in a while. Requests for jalapenos for the rib-eye and Dijon mustard for the mash potatoes was accomodated with no fuss. The jalapenos were nicely roasted which elevated the presentation and a delicious contribution to the steak. The rib-eye was $51.50 which is the average price in our price comparison. Being that it’s a superb and it incuded the garlic mashed potatoes makes this one an excellent value.

9. Magnolia Tavern

Vancouver – East
Hidden Gem

Magnolia Tavern have a new chef who has stepped up quality of the food. The Cajun rubbed ribeye with mashed potatoes is a good value. It’s one of the better steaks I’ve had this side of the river.

10. El Gaucho Vancouver

Vancouver – Waterfront
$$$$ + 20%

El Goucho is well known in Portland. Vancouver is a new edition. They charge top dollar. The table side Caesar salad is exceptional and actually worth the money. Their bar is kind of like a hotel bar. They can make basic cocktails but not really craft cocktails. The bar staff are friendly but not that knowledgeable. The live music is a nice touch. INSIDER TIP: Keep in mind they have a mandatory 20% service charge which they state is not the tip.. You can get better bang for your buck elsewhere, like Ruth’s Chris, Laurelhurst Market etc.

11. Michael Jordan’s Steak House

Vancouver- Ridgefield
Decent Bet

Not the level of the one in Grand Central in Manhattan but a decent bet. Tomahawk Tuesday is the day you want to go.

12. Morton’s

Portland – Downtown
Decent

Good but better choices for your money. I’ve dined at Morton’s in several cites. They’re not created equal. Manhattan and Las Vegas Morton’s are very good. Portland is just ok. The steaks are good but not amazing. The vegetables are great. The cocktails taste watered down due to shaking with crushed ice yet they’re $18-$20. Service is usually good. But for the value in Portland, Ruth Chris, El Goucho and Ringside are better on every level (except the delicious bread Morton’s has). Portland City Grill is a similar value but there you have a magnificent view. Morton’s in Portland has the potential for greatness…if they stepped it up.
