Best French Dip in VanPort
The origin of the French dip sandwich doesn’t start in France. It’s from LA! It’s called a French Dip because of the roll it’s served in. Who created it? There’s a disputed claim between two Los Angeles restaurants, Philippe’s The Original and Cole’s, both of which opened in 1908. Philippe’s claims its founder accidentally dropped a roll into a pan of beef drippings, and a customer asked for it anyway. Cole’s version is that a customer with sore gums requested their roll be dipped in juice to soften it. Regardless, who makes the best French Dip in VanPort? These are the ones you want.
1. Ondus on the Waterfront
Vancouver – WaterfrontOndus is a restaurant in the AC Hotel on the waterfront. They’re a legit scratch kitchen and their French dip is the best I’ve encountered. Their sandwich is packed with roast beef that’s shaved and tossed with French onion soup served on a baguette with Gruyere and roasted garlic aioli. It doesn’t get much better than this
2.Billy Blues Bar and Grill
Vancouver – Hazel Dell
Cool roadhouse style bar & grill with live music. It’s the best club to see bands on the Washington side of the river. Fortunately, unlike most music venues, the chow at Billy’s is really good. Their French dip is one of the best you’ll find.
3. Clyde’s Prime Rib Restaurant and Bar
Portland – Central
Not my first choice for a steak but Clyde’s has a loyal following. One of the reasons is their fab prime rib French dip.
4. Horse Brass Pub
Portland – Belmont
Dependable legit British pub grub. The vibe is perfect. Other than the American accents, this could be a pub in England or Ireland. And they also have a great French Dip that pairs well with a pint of ale.
5. Amaro’s Table Downtown
Vancouver – Downtown
Amaro’s Table is regarded as one of the best eateries in the land. The tough choice is in what to order. It’s a target rich environment. Their French Dip is a great choice.
6. Crave Grille
Vancouver – East
People often focus on their burgers but Crave has one of the best selection of sandwiches in town. Their Prime Rib Dip is savory goodness. Try it with their excellent onion rings or cajun tots.
7. Amaro’s Table East
Vancouver – EastWe find that really great restaurants are the ones that hit a home run most of the time. The amazing and more rare ones hit it every time. The dishes at Amaro’s latest location is on point with their downtown eatery. Their French Dip is held in high regard amongst the fans of this classic handheld.
8. Gustav’s
Vancouver – East
Good German style eatery by the folks from Amaro’s Table. The Gustav version hasn’t been copied from Amaro’s Table. It is its own take.
9. Prairie Tavern
Vancouver – Brush Prairie
Prairie Tavern is a good local roadhouse that serves comfort food and craft beer. They serve a bit of everything including a French Dip that has a solid reputation of being one of the better ones.
