Best Butcher Shops in VanPort
Our lists are mostly about restaraunts and bars. But these days steak, pork chops and ribs are expensive and sometimes you’d just rather cook it yourself. Yet finding the best meat is tricky. We’ve found that a lot of folks aren’t aware of the many butchers in VanPort. These are the best ones.
1. Gartner’s Country Meat Market
Portland – Northeast
When you say butcher shop a lot people think of Gartner’s. They’ve been in business since 1959 and their location is easy acesss from either side of the river. Those are great advantages but the main reason of their polularity is their size and selection. Gartner’s has a huge amount of sausage, steak and all things meat. Parking is available in the free lot.
2. Western Meat Market
Portland- Northwest
Longtime family-owned butcher offering a large selection of premium beef, pork & poultry packages. Their hot Italian and jalapeno sausage are ok but their hot links are my favorite in VanPort. They have a small parking lot that is conveniently in front of the store.
3. Top Choice Meat Market
Vancouver – Orchards
Excellent meat market with great pices. Their steaks are popular. The Hill Brand hot links and jalapeno cheddar sausages are fantastic and are some of the best spicy sausage I’ve found in the Portland/Vancouver area. The hot Italian on the other hand was not as impressive. Small free parking lot.
4. Mayers Custom Meats
Vancouver – North
Mayers is a really good meat market that has a western frontier vibe. They have a solid fan base of their beef jerky. The spicy Italian sausage isn’t very spicy. The jalapeno and cheddar sausage is just a little spicy but very tasty. Parking is free in their lot.
5. Sheridan Fruit Company
Portland – Central
Sheridan is not really a butcher shop but we include them because they have some very good meat. The sell produce, spices, deli items and a good assortment of sausage. Free parking is available in a shared lot.
6. Butcher Boys
Vancouver – Central
Butcher shop since 1969. They offer beef, pork & poultry, smoked meats & they boast 50 kinds of housemade sausage. Everything is well displayed. Some is refrigerated and some of it is frozen. There’s an adequate amount of parking.
7. The Meating Place
Portland – Hillsboro
The Meating Place is a butcher shop with a cafe next door. Or is it the other way around? I don’t if the chicken or the egg came first but it’s great to be able to sample meat from the cafe to help in your choosing what to buy.
The Meating Place is one of the better butcher shops I’ve found. Aesthetically, it reminds me of a slightly smaller version of Gartner’s Country Meat Market. All the usual suspects are well represented, but less common meats are also offered, like rabbit, duck, elk, and even a “bacon burger,” which is hamburger with a 20% bacon mix.
Like Gartner’s, they have an extensive range of sausage. Some are pre-cooked and smoked, while others are uncooked. I bought a New York Hot and a cheddar jalapeño sausage. I boiled both at home. They’re pretty good. Although neither equaled Pink’s, the jalapeño cheddar was excellent.
This is a top-notch butcher shop worth the drive. Ample free parking is available in their lot. If you go, put an order in at their cafe next door, then shop for meat.
8. Otto’s Sausage Kitchen & Meat Market
Portland – Eastmooreland
They’ve been in Portland since the 1920’s. So it’s no wonder why they are so well known. They’re part butcher, part market and part deli. But it’s all German style so the flavor is more tame. Street parking is catch as catch can.
9. Smokie River Smoked Meats
Vancouver – Camas
Camas doesn’t have much to choose from when it comes to meat. Thankfuly there’s Smokie River. They’re a compact, little meat market. Their jalapeno cheddar sausage is decent. Free lot and street parking available.
10. Scratch Meats
Portland – Northwest
Their offerings are pretty good but it’s way too expensive. Especially with Western Meats a few blocks away. Street parking is sparce.
