Best Breakfast Sandwich in VanPort
Sometimes you need a grab and go breakfast. People debate about the best morning handheld. We did a deep dive to find the great ones. These are the best in VanPort.
1. Pine State Biscuits
Portland – CentralPine State Biscuits has five locations. The Reggie Deluxe is epic. It has fried chicken, bacon, cheddar, and a fried egg on a fresh biscuit with sausage gravy (you can choose mushroom gravy if you’re of that tribe). Oh. My. Goodness. It’s almost not fair to call it a sandwich. I can’t imagine eating it without a fork. Nevertheless, it’s pretty fantastic. The sandwich is $24 before tip.
2. Al & Ernie’s
Vancouver – Battle Ground
This lovely bakery only uses Italian flour which has none of the additives that cause some glutten issues. Their bread is fab. Especially their sourdough. But Al & Ernie’s serves one of the best begal breakfast sandwiches around. INSIDER TIP: They don’t have bagels on Tuesdays. Ask for bacon AND sausage on a jalapeno bagel for a savory meal.
3. Tammy’s Bichen Kitchen
Vancouver – Hazel Dale
Tammy has a few breakfast sandwiches but the Goober is the best: This is an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach: sausage patty, bacon, a couple of fried eggs, cheese, and a hash brown on a Costco croissant. It’s bold and savory. The meats bring a tasty combination of flavor. It’s a hearty grab-and-go and the best part it’s only $7.29.
4. Egg Carton
Portland – Southeast
They have nine different breakfast sandwiches. I chose The Bern. It has an egg, in-house made spicy sausage, pepper jack cheese, avocado, grilled onions, pickled jalapeños, and their special roasted red pepper aioli. All on their buttermilk biscuit.
It has really good flavor. The biscuit is a little on the hard side. The avocado’s nice. I did pass on the arugula. Its got a lot going on between the jalapeños, the spicy aioli, and the spicy sausage. Maybe for some people it might be way too much. But if you like spicy, this is a good sandwich.
5. Brewed Cafe & Pub
Vancouver – Downtown
Biscuits sandwiches can be hard and crumbly. But Brewed’s is soft. It’s one of the better biscuits we’ve had on a sandwich. The egg is poured thin, then folded into a nice four-layered package that fits perfectly on the biscuit. The sausage has a decent amount of flavor, and the cheddar is on point.
6. Bleu Door Bakery
Vancouver – Downtown
It’s a well-known Vancouver eatery with a savvy European vibe with a French art direction. Their Breakfast Sandwich has a more refined approach that fits the vibe of the restaurant: gourmet, nicely seasoned scrambled eggs, a large sausage link, and cheddar cheese on an in-house baked croissant.

7. Scratch Breakfast
Vancouver – Downtown
Scratch is a food cart next to Tap Union House. I’m not interested in vegan food. When I see a place is vegan, my M.O. is to keep scrolling. I have a few good friends who are vegan who’ve dragged me to places they rave about, saying they’re “as good as the real thing.” Every time, I’ve been disappointed. But so many people recommended Scratch that I decided to take one for the team and review it.
I was amazed that this vegan sandwich was not only okay—it was excellent. The flavor was fantastic, and the combination of ingredients worked beautifully together. The hash brown helped in a big way, and the pepper cheese sauce had a zesty kick that served as the perfect punctuation point for the ensemble.
8. Denny’s
Portland – Jantzen Beach
Sure, it’s a national chain, but it’s open 24/7 and serves breakfast all day. Their Moons Over My Hammy (ham, scrambled eggs with Swiss and American cheeses on grilled sourdough) was recommended by a number of people. Meat, eggs, and cheese on sourdough are a winning combo. Denny’s made good choices with the cheese, ham, and bread, plus the scramble is folded to cover the bread without spilling out. It’s served with hash browns.
9. Fried Egg I’m In Love
Portland – North
They have a few locations in the Portland area, open seven days a week until mid-afternoon. They’re all about breakfast and offer eleven sandwiches to choose from. I ordered an Egg Zeppelin (toasted sourdough, two fried eggs, two sausage patties, two slices of cheddar, and holy aioli). Sausage, egg, and cheese on sourdough is a solid combo. The patties are very thin, but two is the right balance with the eggs. The sandwich was good, but it had a slightly odd flavor for my palate. At first, I blamed the sausage, but I discovered the holy aioli was the culprit. The flavor of the sausage was mild—it’s okay, but I would have preferred a bit more zest, like a Jimmy Dean. Next time, I’ll have them skip the holy aioli.
10. EggSlut
Portland – Overlook
Eggslut is by award-winning chef Alvin Cailan. Eggslut began as a food truck in LA in 2011. Alvin now has several locations around the US and a few abroad. I chose the sausage sandwich and the bacon version.
Eggslut makes an excellent breakfast sandwich. The sausage version could have used a little more flavor. This sausage seemed a little polite. The aioli is okay, but it’s not quite my cup of tea.
The bacon version has good flavor. There’s enough saltiness. I didn’t care for the Chipotle ketchup. It has a bit of sweetness to it, and that’s not something that appeals to me on a breakfast sandwich.
The buns look great, but they’re dry. It tastes like a hamburger bun. In fact, for the last few bites, I was pulling off the bun and just eating the egg and the meat.
A nice happy surprise were the hash browns. They were boxing up some and they looked kind of good, so I thought I would try it. I’m glad I did.
So, here’s the deal. It’s a quality sandwich. If I was going to eat there again, I would order the bacon version without the Chipotle ketchup.
11. Dev’s Coffee Bar
Vancouver – East
Dev’s has two locations. One in Battle Ground and another in Camas. Their Squatch is a great, savory sandwich. It has two eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese and cream cheese on a choice of bagel. They have a number of add-ons to customize your breakfast handheld.
12. River Maiden
Vancouver – Central
I ordered their Egg Sando with Bacon. The ciabatta was good, the eggs were a quality scramble, and the bacon was flavorful without a lot of fat like fast-food bacon. Neither the menu nor the emailed receipt mentioned what kind of cheese was used, but whatever it was, it did the job. River Maiden’s scramble is gourmet—but that also makes it prone to droppings. You definitely need a plate underneath it.
13. Dawnbringer
Portland – North
iDawnbringer s a cart that makes really good breakfast sandwiches. I tried their Twilight Tasty. It’s bacon, sausage, scrambled egg, cheddar, and mayonnaise on a muffin-type bread. Actually, it’s a bit like if a muffin and a pancake had a love child. It’s pretty good, but the sausage didn’t have as much flavor as one expects from breakfast sausage, and I would have rather had a garden-variety muffin or perhaps just sliced bread over the muffin/pancake hybrid. The bacon had great flavor.
14. Buenos Dias
Vancouver – East
Their regular breakfast sandwich is an egg, cheese with a choice of bacon or sausage on an English muffin . It is small but very good. It’s what you wish an egg McMuffin would be.
15. Crave Grill
Vancouver – east
Crave’s Breakfast Sandwich (over med eggs, bacon, tomato, cheddar, and onion ring sauce on rustic white bread) comes with fried potatoes. The tomatoes and a slightly sweet “onion ring sauce” makes the combo more polite and less savory. If I were to order it again, I’d skip the tomatoes and sauce. But Crave has better breakfast items including a Chicken and Biscuit Sandwich and a McScuffin Sandwich. It should be said Crave makes one of my favorite breakfast burritos, and given the choice, I’d pick it over their sandwich seven days a week and twice on Sunday.
