On The Down Low

There’s a new speakeasy in Vancouver, and it’s in an unlikely place—inside McMenamins at 164th & 18th. It’s called The Lost Lounge, and the entrance is a door marked “Employees Only,” tucked behind the restaurant’s bar.

Once inside, and after your eyes adjust to the low light, you’ll find a small tiki-style speakeasy with wall art illuminated by black lights. At the center is a feature that resembles a water fountain, but instead of water, fog rolls over Hawaiian, monolithic-looking rocks. Above it hangs a half-dome moon. The lighting in the room shifts and morphs from red to green.

It’s an intimate space with seating for about 20 people. The speakeasy doesn’t have its own dedicated bar; drinks are made in the restaurant’s bar, but they’re unique to The Lost Lounge. Most are tiki-style cocktails served tall, with crushed ice.

I ordered the La Pantera (Cazadores Reposado, Nixta Licor de Elote, and Edgefield Coffee Liqueur). My wife ordered a Tom Collins (not on the menu). Both drinks arrived in themed glassware with bamboo-style paper straws.

They also have a small food menu, though we didn’t partake since we had already eaten in the restaurant. McMenamins has done a fantastic job with the art direction, and they even have plenty of merch to celebrate their latest addition.

I foresee The Lost Lounge becoming very popular.✌🏻
